Have you ever taken a bath in Thermal water? Then you know that the experience can feel very nice and revitalizing for your body. Scientists have discovered the Lost City Hydrothermal Field for a long time now, but it is the first time that they’re sending out warnings that the underwater ecosystem might be in danger. Keep on reading to learn more about the underwater “city” and what we can do to help preserve the ecosystem!
The Lost City Hydrothermal Field
Discovered in 2000, the Lost City Hydrothermal Field has been venting Hydrogen and Methane for at least 100,000 years. This process has created a unique environment for different life forms to be able to survive here. Most of it is microbial life that has no need for sunlight or oxygen.

Scientists think the 60-meter-tall carbonate chimneys can hold clues to life’s origins on Earth and even further. The field produces more hydrocarbons than volcanic vents, which raises the possibility that similar ecosystems exist on “Europa or Enceladus”, which can help us understand how life really evolved and what it needs to be able to survive!
These Underwater Ecosystems are in danger
Since the Lost City Hydrothermal Field has been found, there are multiple parties interested in doing research near it. For nearly 120.000 years it has been untouched by humans, and we’re about to change it. Companies want to start deep-sea mining, which will have a negative impact on it. There are possible and often irreversible damages that can be done to these ecosystems. Experts warn that if they keep this up, the ancient marvel will be lost forever.
People all over the world are coming together to protect different wildlife species and spaces, but not many people are aware of what is happening under the water and how we need to protect the wildlife underwater as well!
