Dan Saunders was an Australian bartender who worked near a hotel with an ATM machine. One night, he decided to withdraw some money while he didn’t have any. When transferring money from his credit card to his savings account, he discovered a “glitch” in the system. While the system said “operation canceled” the money still got transferred to his account. However, it never showed up on his credit card statements, which made him check out how far he could take it.
His spending quickly spiraled out of control with lavish and extravagant purchases. He went to the most expensive stores he could find and chartered a 90.000 AUD jet to an Asian island for a weekend getaway with friends. Eventually, he spent up to 1.6 million Australian Dollars. However, he didn’t spend it all on himself. He used part of the money to pay the university fees of friends. Eventually, he spent over 1.6 million Australian dollars in four months before he decided to end his adventures.
Bartender Dan Saunders ended up in prison for 12 months
Eventually, Dan Saunders had a moment of realization that he was actively stealing from the bank, and he didn’t want to live like that anymore. So he went to the NAB and 2 news outlets to confess to what he was doing and turned himself in. Dan was charged with theft and fraud, and received a prison punishment of 12 months.
After being released, he is back to work at a restaurant for 22 dollars an hour, which is a lot less than his infinite money glitch. When asked if he regretted any of the decisions he made, the answer was a clear no as he would always remember the experiences!
