In 2022 Porsche announced that their racing department was looking to join the Formula 1 sport. At first, there were rumours of the manufacturer joining the grid as an 11th team like Andretti Racing wanted to do. However, they changed their mind and opted to become part of an already existing team! However, recently Porsche announced that it would stop their Formula 1 dreams and focus on their other projects.
It is not the first time Porsche has joined Formula One! In the past, Porsche has been one of the partners, but it ended in the 1991 season. They have left the sport alone but looked into joining when the new regulations would be implemented.
What Was Porsches Plan?
Just like Audi did with the Sauber F1 team, Porsche planned to buy a team and take over part of the team and the complete engine production department! By doing this Porsche could expand their racing division to include more different racing sports.

However, not many teams are willing to sell around 50% of their Formula 1 racing team! It would mean that they would lose the ability to make decisions by themselves and would force them to ask permission from Porsche. Most teams aren’t willing to do this…. unless you bring enough money to the table! Within sports, everything has a price tag so if you have enough money, you will be able to get what you want
Red Bull Was A Potential Team
Porsche was actively trying to negotiate with the Red Bull F1 team and they planned to get 50% of the responsibility of the team and full control over the engine productions. However, Red Bull didn’t agree to these terms or the bid that Porsche had in store for them.
After this rejection, Porsche announced that they were going to put the plans of joining F1 behind them for the foreseeable future. In this same announcement, they mentioned the fact that they were already successful in different other motorsports. Porsche wanted to focus more on the development of their Formula-E cars!
