Pornhub Dodges Upcoming Age Checks, Sparking Outrage Over Online Safety Loophole

People watch pornhub

Watching a bit of porn every once in a while is not bad for you. However, we can all agree that minors shouldn’t be indulging in that type of content. To protect more kids from accessing these sites, new rules are being implemented in the UK. However, the most popular website, pornhub, is using a loophole to dodge these new rules for as long as possible. Keep on reading to discover what their loophole is!

Ofcom wants to protect younger users from harmful content

The regulatory body, Ofcom, wants to protect minors from gaining access to all types of pornographic content. To enforce this, new rules are being introduced for websites that have this type of content in January 2025. To make sure that the age restrictions are being enforced, Ofcom wants websites to use ID Checks or facial recognition software to be able to determine the age of one of its users.

Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo, does not agree with these measures and prefers device-level solutions instead. It would be a serious privacy risk for users to store their facial information on a website’s database. They also found a loophole that they can use to only start enforcing the rules that come out later during the year.

Pornhub won’t be able to dodge these age checks forever

Pornhub’s loophole might buy them a little bit of time by not enforcing it in January. However, this doesn’t mean that they can avoid it forever. Later in 2025, more rules will be implemented to verify the age of users of these sites. Especially platforms that contain a large amount of pornographic content must follow those rules. These other rules will only be implemented in July 2025, so Pornhub has little time to find a new solution. Critics think that this loophole is undermining the efforts of Ofcom to help protect minors. Other experts think it is dangerous to have such online safety measures that collect user data.
