The study focused on a large Adélie penguin colony made up of about 60,000 birds. Scientists recorded ammonia levels up to 1,000 times higher than the surrounding environment—remarkably, these levels stayed elevated even after the penguins migrated. That means the chemical impact of their presence lingers long after they’re gone.
This ammonia doesn’t just disappear. It reacts with sulfur-based molecules released by the ocean, speeding up the creation of tiny particles that help form clouds. These clouds are particularly important over the Southern Ocean, a region that still puzzles climate models due to its unpredictable cloud behaviour.
Why Guano Matters More Than You’d Think
The idea that penguin poop may help cool the planet adds an unusual layer to our understanding of the climate system. Until now, scientists didn’t fully appreciate the role of ecosystems, especially remote ones, in atmospheric chemistry.
