Whenever you are going to the hospital, you hope that the specialist is on call and able to help you. Since certain problems need certain skills to be fixed. If you have to undergo surgery, you often have to visit a hospital that has the right facilities and staff to help you. However, this might be a thing of the past. A Chinese surgeon and his team have made a change to health care which will impact the world.
How was the Chinese Surgeon able to perform the surgery?
In the past years, the development of medical robots has become a lot more important and advanced. The facilities in which the surgery was performed, had years of research and data to back up the plan to perform this surgery. He controlled the robot from his office in Shanghai and successfully removed the Tumor from the patient’s lung. The whole surgery lasted just under an hour. Check out the video down below!
In the surgery room, there were 12 nurses to assist in case anything were to go wrong. However, the main surgeon was not even close to the building where this surgery took place. He guided a self-developed robot remotely from his own office in Shanghai. The robot was in a facility that was just under 5000km away. The distance wasn’t any problem as the latency from the input from was so small that the doctor didn’t have any problems slowing him down!
How does this impact the future of Surgeries?
This successful remote surgery opens up the possibilities for medical help all over the world. There is a shortage of specialists who can perform these types of surgeries, which means either patients or the surgeons themselves have to travel to help people.

With these robots, it would be possible to help more people all across the country, without having to leave their own office. It will probably take quite some time before these robots get approved in your hospital, but it is probably the next step for most hospitals!
