A new study in mice has revealed a previously overlooked factor in erectile function: fibroblasts, specialized cells in the penis that help trigger and maintain erections. How Fibroblasts Help You Get, and more importantly Keep, a Boner

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University discovered that fibroblasts absorb norepinephrine, allowing the smooth muscle in the penis to relax and promote blood flow. Their research found:

• More fibroblasts = stronger, longer-lasting erections
• Aging reduces fibroblast numbers, possibly explaining age-related ED
• Notch signaling, a molecular switch, controls fibroblast activity

When researchers turned off the Notch pathway in mice, fibroblast numbers increased, leading to significantly longer erections—without any medication.

Could This Replace Viagra?

The most popular medicine used to help with getting long-lasting boners or optimized sexual performance is Viagra. However, it is not for everyone. Around 30% of ED patients don’t respond to drugs like Viagra, which work by enhancing blood flow but don’t address the root causes of ED. 

However, with this new method, and by Targeting fibroblasts, we could offer a more effective, long-term solution, particularly for aging men who have trouble “keeping it up”. According to researcher Léo Laborieux, juveniles were observed spraying pre-venom, a weaker but easily replenished toxin, rather than their more lethal venom used for subduing prey. This makes the Pre-venom a first line of defense, designed to deter rather than kill. Spraying is likely a last resort against predators like birds or mammals.

A Costly Yet Effective Defense

Producing venom is energetically expensive, and scientists believe Tityus Achilles evolved this ability under intense predatory pressure. While injecting venom is deadly for prey, spraying provides a low-risk, high-reward strategy for survival.

This discovery expands our understanding of scorpion defense mechanisms, raising new questions about how environmental pressures shape venom evolution. With further research, Tityus Achilles may reveal even more about the adaptations of venomous arachnids.

A recent study, has shown that men’s bodies may subconsciously adjust sperm quality in response to perceived sexual competition. Researchers found that when men believed their partners had more male friends or coworkers, their sperm concentration increased—an evolutionary mechanism aimed at outcompeting potential rivals.

The Science Behind Sperm Strategy

Evolutionary biologists have long theorized that sperm competition—the idea that males adjust reproductive traits in response to mating competition—plays a role in human reproduction. In this study, researchers analyzed 34 heterosexual couples and discovered:

• Higher Sperm Concentration in Competitive Scenarios: Men who perceived a greater risk of competition had denser ejaculates, potentially increasing their reproductive chances.
• Debunking the ‘Separation Hypothesis’: A previous 1993 study suggested that time apart led to better sperm quality due to biological anticipation of infidelity. However, modern technology and constant communication may have diminished this effect.

Does Context Affect Sperm Quality?

Interestingly, sperm quality varied depending on the context of ejaculation. Intercourse-produced sperm had higher concentrations, supporting the idea that the body prioritizes reproductive success. However, masturbation led to sperm with greater motility, which may serve a different biological function, such as maintaining sperm health.

While these findings reinforce the link between psychological factors and reproductive biology, scientists emphasize that more research is needed to fully understand this subconscious sperm strategy.
